How I measure a manuscript
For a book consisting mainly of text, I start with its character count. This lets me assess its length before the final page size and layout are chosen. A page count from Word is less useful: changing margins, font size or line spacing changes the number of pages without changing the text.
The Polish publishing unit, or arkusz wydawniczy, is a measure of content volume. It is not a physical sheet of paper or a fixed number of printed pages. The approximate 40,000-character calculation applies to continuous prose. Poetry, complex tables and heavily illustrated publications need individual assessment.
In Word, look for the character count including spaces. Microsoft's Word guidance explains the available statistics. Tell me whether your figure includes notes, the bibliography and captions. If you are unsure, send the file so I can assess it.
An illustrative calculation
Suppose a manuscript contains 240,000 characters including spaces. Dividing this by 40,000 gives 6 publishing units. At the starting rate of PLN 200 net per unit, the calculation gives PLN 1,200 net for typesetting.
This is an illustration for straightforward prose. A cover, language proofreading, an e-book, printing and delivery are quoted separately, depending on the scope.
If chapters or substantial illustration material are added after the quotation, the scope should be reviewed before further work. Additional material can affect both the price and the schedule.
What affects the price
I consider the publication's structure, including heading levels, notes, tables and indexes. A straightforward novel and an academic monograph of equal text length can require different amounts of work.
The condition of the files matters too. One current manuscript, clearly identified images and complete captions help establish the scope. Conflicting versions create questions about which material should be used. Well-organised files shorten the work and make quoting easier.
I also ask whether photographs need retouching and what index material is available. Typesetting should be distinguished from editing and language proofreading. When comparing quotations, check the services actually included.
Print preparation and additional services
When I typeset a book, print preparation is generally included. I prepare and check the files against the agreed printer requirements. Printing the physical copies is a separate service, with the quantity, paper, binding and delivery priced individually.
Standalone e-book preparation starts at PLN 125 net per publishing unit. If I also typeset the book, I agree an additional fee for the electronic edition. I need source text or layout files, not a finished print PDF.
Cover preparation and ISBN arrangements depend on the agreed scope. Basic photo retouching starts at approximately PLN 10-15 net per image. I assess older photographs individually when restoration is needed.
What to send for a quote
Send the current manuscript and describe the book, illustrations, notes, tables and intended deadline. Tell me whether you also need a cover, ISBN, e-book or printing. If the page size or print run is undecided, say so. I can begin the discussion without a complete production specification.
